New Nominations to Rajya Sabha Announced
New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has announced the nomination of four prominent individuals to the Rajya Sabha, including former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, Kerala BJP leader C. Sadanandan Master, and historian Meenakshi Jain.
The official notification released late Saturday confirmed that these nominations were made by the President of India to fill vacancies left by retiring members.
According to the notification, the President exercised powers under Article 80 of the Constitution to nominate these distinguished individuals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for the nominations, particularly praising Nikam's dedication to the legal profession and his commitment to justice.
Modi highlighted Nikam's successful legal career and his role in advocating for constitutional values, wishing him well in his new parliamentary role.
Nikam, known for his work as a government counsel in the Mumbai terror attacks case, has been selected as a BJP candidate for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North Central.
The Prime Minister also commended Shringla's diplomatic contributions, noting that his insights will enhance discussions in Parliament.
Shringla has held significant positions, including India's Ambassador to the United States and Thailand, and served as High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
As a 1984 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, he played a crucial role as Chief Coordinator for India's G20 Presidency in 2023.
Modi expressed joy over Jain's nomination, recognizing her as a distinguished scholar and historian whose work has greatly contributed to academic discourse.
Jain, a former lecturer at Gargi College, has received the Padma Shri award and authored numerous books on Indian history and education during British rule.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged Sadanandan Master's resilience and commitment to national development, despite facing severe challenges.
Master, who has previously run for office in Kerala, is known for his dedication to youth empowerment and social work.
The President nominates 12 eminent individuals to the Rajya Sabha, and currently, four seats are vacant.
