What’s Next for West Bengal Elections? ECI Holds Key Meetings Amid Voter List Updates
Crucial Meetings Ahead of West Bengal Assembly Elections
Kolkata: As the final voters' list for West Bengal is released, excluding names under judicial review as directed by the Supreme Court, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to hold significant meetings on Monday and Tuesday. These discussions are part of the preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
The meetings will unfold in two phases, commencing at 11 a.m. on Monday. ECI officials will engage in a virtual conference with West Bengal's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Manoj Kumar Agarwal, along with Additional CEOs, Joint CEOs, Deputy CEOs, District Magistrates, and district police superintendents.
On Tuesday, the second phase will see participation from ECI's senior officials in New Delhi, the CEO, the state nodal police officer (SNPO), and various coordinating officers from central security and investigative agencies involved in the elections.
During Monday's session, ECI officials are expected to assess the deployment of 240 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), which were stationed in the state starting Sunday.
An insider from the CEO's office mentioned that the ECI will inquire about how these CAPF units are being utilized for area control and their acclimatization to local geographies.
Additionally, the meeting may address the potential deployment of another 240 companies on March 10. The progress of judicial reviews concerning approximately 60 lakh voters' documents by ECI-appointed judicial officers will also be evaluated.
Tuesday's agenda will focus on enhancing coordination between state and central agencies to optimize CAPF utilization, improve collaboration among various intelligence and enforcement bodies to curb the influence of money, liquor, and drugs, and ensure safety in regions near international and inter-state borders.
Despite these preparations, there remains uncertainty regarding the announcement of polling dates and the implementation of the model code of conduct. Initially, polling dates were expected to be revealed in the first week of March, right after the Holi festival on March 4. However, ongoing judicial reviews of voter documents suggest that the announcement may now occur in the second week of March.
