New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of the Indo-Pacific as a key area for global growth and stability during the recent Quad foreign ministers' meeting. He urged the group to focus on maritime security and to enhance economic options within the region.
In his opening address, Jaishankar highlighted the need for 'trusted and transparent' partnerships to foster peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. The meeting included notable attendees such as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, with Jaishankar leading the discussions.
This gathering comes at a time of heightened global apprehension regarding China's military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific. Jaishankar reiterated that the Quad's primary focus remains the Indo-Pacific region.
He stated, 'At the global level, we must tackle challenges such as supply chain resilience, connectivity issues, and gaps in critical infrastructure. Each of these areas presents an opportunity for enhanced partnerships.'
Jaishankar also mentioned specific 'concerns' affecting the Indo-Pacific without going into detail. He stressed the necessity of building strategic confidence, ensuring maritime security, and promoting economic alternatives through collaborative efforts.
He remarked, 'As maritime democracies and market economies, we share the duty to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, which should be a catalyst for global growth and stability.'
Penny Wong, the Australian Foreign Minister, advocated for strengthening the Quad's effectiveness, expressing a commitment to maintaining momentum for a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
Rubio noted that the Quad's collaborative efforts have become increasingly relevant in light of recent global events, stating that the group can tackle significant challenges, including energy security and freedom of navigation.
