Strengthening Ties: India and Africa's Future
New Delhi: In light of the intricate geopolitical landscape, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the growing importance of the India-Africa partnership, which he described as a beacon of "stability" and "reliability" amid global uncertainties.
Speaking at the launch of the logo, theme, and website for the forthcoming India-Africa Forum Summit-IV, Jaishankar highlighted that India and Africa are not merely development allies but also collaborators in crafting a better global future.
His remarks come as various global conflicts, including a prolonged crisis in West Asia, continue to unfold.
The summit's logo features a lion overlaid on interlocking maps of India and Africa, embodying the theme 'Enduring Partnership Shared Vision' and marking the event for May 28-31.
Jaishankar noted that this summit offers a "unique opportunity" to enhance engagement and shape the future of the partnership, aiming for a more ambitious, inclusive, and forward-looking collaboration.
"As we navigate through complex geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges, our partnership gains particular significance," he stated.
"It symbolizes stability in a chaotic world, reliability in uncertain times, and solidarity during hardships," he added.
He reiterated that India and Africa are not just partners in development but also in the quest for a better world.
The event saw participation from numerous ambassadors and diplomats representing various African nations.
Jaishankar pointed out that India has broadened its diplomatic presence in Africa, establishing 17 new missions, bringing the total to 46.
He stressed that Africa holds a "central place" in India's foreign policy, driven by principles of equality, mutual respect, and shared advancement.
"We gather here to celebrate the next chapter in the enduring partnership between India and Africa through the India-Africa Forum Summit framework," he remarked.
The relationship between India and Africa is deeply rooted in historical ties, cultivated over centuries through cultural exchanges and human interactions.
Jaishankar noted that India's support for African nations during their fight against colonialism has further solidified these bonds.
He highlighted that the narratives of India's freedom struggle and Africa's liberation are intertwined, stating, "Our shared history of struggle, solidarity, resilience, and aspirations continues to shape our partnership."
The minister emphasized that the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision aligns with Africa's Agenda 2063, both serving as complementary pathways toward prosperity through sustainable and inclusive development.
Jaishankar also mentioned that India and Africa's engagement has expanded across key areas, with numerous high-level political dialogues, as India advocates for Africa's rightful role in global governance.
A significant milestone was the African Union's inclusion in the G20 during India's presidency in 2023, reflecting the belief that the Global South's voices should influence future global governance.
He concluded by stating that India prioritizes development cooperation and capacity-building initiatives at the core of its partnership, with defense, security, and maritime cooperation being vital components aimed at ensuring stability in the Indian Ocean Region and safer maritime routes.
