Abhishek Banerjee Under Investigation

Kolkata: Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Lok Sabha member, is set to visit the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Bhabani Bhavan, South Kolkata, today. This visit is linked to allegations of inciting violence and making threats against Union Home Minister Amit Shah prior to the recent Assembly elections in West Bengal.

An FIR was filed against Banerjee last month at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station, which initially handled the investigation before it was transferred to the CID on June 11.

On June 12, the CID issued a notice summoning him for questioning, requesting his presence by noon on Tuesday.

In the past two days, specifically June 14 and June 15, Banerjee underwent extensive questioning by two investigative bodies regarding his alleged involvement in separate cases.

On June 14, he was interrogated for approximately eight and a half hours by CID officials concerning a signature mismatch case.

This case involves accusations of forgery related to the signatures of Trinamool Congress legislators on a resolution that nominated Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition, which raised concerns about discrepancies in the submitted documents.

The following day, June 15, he faced over 11 hours of questioning by Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials at their office in Salt Lake, linked to a multi-crore cash-for-school jobs scandal.

Banerjee has asserted that this relentless questioning is a tactic of the Bharatiya Janata Party aimed at eliminating opposition in the state. He has expressed his willingness to cooperate with all investigations but vowed not to succumb to any coercive tactics.
