What’s Happening in Iran? India Issues Travel Advisory Amid Protests
India Monitors Iran's Unrest
New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs of India announced on Friday that it is actively monitoring the situation in Iran, where protests have erupted due to rising inflation and a depreciating currency.
On January 5, the Indian government advised its citizens to refrain from non-essential travel to Iran and urged those already in the country to exercise caution, particularly in areas experiencing protests.
During a weekly press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed inquiries regarding the unrest in Iran.
"We are keeping a close watch on the developments in Iran. As you may have noticed, we have issued an advisory. Approximately 10,000 Indian nationals and individuals of Indian origin reside there," Jaiswal stated.
The protests, which began in Tehran roughly two weeks ago, have spread across numerous Iranian provinces, resulting in fatalities.
These demonstrations were sparked by a significant decline in the value of the Iranian rial against the US dollar.
Jaiswal was also questioned about the reported detention of several Indian crew members aboard a tanker by Iranian authorities last December, as well as the status of consular access.
Reports indicate that the tanker was seized for alleged regulatory violations.
"Yes, we have requested consular access... We understand that 10 individuals have been detained. Our embassy is in contact with Iranian authorities regarding this issue, and we have sought consular access to check on their well-being and provide any necessary assistance," Jaiswal confirmed.
