What’s Behind the Recent Explosions in Punjab? A Deep Dive into the Disturbing Events
Explosions Rock Punjab, Raising Security Concerns
Chandigarh: Punjab experienced a wave of panic on Tuesday night due to two consecutive explosions near security facilities, prompting strong reactions from opposition parties who labeled these incidents as attempts to destabilize the region.
The initial blast occurred around 8 PM in Jalandhar, just outside the Border Security Force's Punjab Frontier headquarters, followed by a second explosion around 11 PM near the army cantonment in Khasa, Amritsar. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, according to police sources.
Authorities have launched an investigation into both explosions.
Suhail Mir Qasim, Senior Superintendent of Police for Amritsar (Rural), reported that police were alerted to a loud noise around 11 PM on a road in Khasa. Our teams responded promptly, he stated.
Initial assessments suggested that an explosive device was thrown towards the boundary wall, resulting in the blast, as noted by the SSP. Police indicated that a piece of tin from the wall fell due to the explosion.
In the aftermath, forensic and bomb disposal teams were dispatched to the site to gather evidence.
Aditya S Warrier, Superintendent of Police for Amritsar (Rural), who was also present at the scene, confirmed that investigations are ongoing. Additionally, army officials evaluated the situation, leading to the area being secured.
CCTV footage captured the explosion occurring at night. A local resident mentioned that the loud noise woke his family, prompting them to investigate.
In Jalandhar, the blast severely damaged a scooter, shattered a traffic signal pole, and broke windowpanes of a nearby shop. Witnesses reported that the scooter, parked outside the BSF headquarters, ignited shortly after the explosion. The vehicle belonged to Gurpreet Singh, a local parcel delivery person.
CCTV footage showed the explosion, which produced a significant cloud of smoke. An unidentified individual was seen fleeing the scene.
A relative of Gurpreet shared with reporters that the scooter caught fire just as he approached it, leading him to immediately inform his father.
Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur confirmed that the Activa scooter parked near the gate unexpectedly caught fire. She assured that Gurpreet is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Punjab's Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, described the Amritsar explosion as low-intensity and noted that no group has claimed responsibility yet. However, he speculated that Pakistan's ISI might be involved.
We suspect that this incident is linked to the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, indicating a possible attempt by Pakistan's ISI to create unrest in Punjab. The state is currently engaged in a proxy conflict on behalf of the nation against Pakistan, he remarked.
Regarding the Jalandhar explosion, the DGP mentioned that the Khalistan Liberation Army (KLF) has taken responsibility, although they are in the process of verifying this claim.
Opposition parties have criticized the AAP government in light of these blasts.
Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), condemned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who also oversees the home portfolio, for the blasts.
Three explosions in just ten days, including two on the same day—one in Jalandhar and another near the Khasa Camp in Amritsar—raise serious concerns about intelligence failures and the deterioration of law and order. Chief Minister @BhagwantMann, who is preoccupied with trivial politics, has lost the right to remain in office, Badal stated in a post on X.
Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also criticized the Mann administration.
The recent back-to-back blasts have alarmed Punjab. The incident in Jalandhar and now near Khasa Camp in Amritsar raises questions about who is attempting to destabilize our state. Why has the Punjab Government failed to prevent such occurrences? What actions is the Government of India taking? These repeated failures indicate a serious breakdown in intelligence and security. The peace of Punjab must not be compromised. We demand accountability and immediate action, Warring expressed in a post on X.
On April 27, an explosion occurred at a freight corridor rail track in Shambhu, Patiala, leading to the arrest of four individuals linked to a pro-Khalistan terror module supported by Pakistan's ISI.
