What’s Behind the Opposition's Push for a Discussion on Bihar's Electoral Roll Revision?
Opposition Demands Parliamentary Discussion on Bihar's Electoral Roll Revision
New Delhi: Members of the Opposition INDIA bloc have filed several notices requesting a debate regarding the revision of the electoral roll in Bihar during both Houses of Parliament on Friday.
An Opposition representative stated that they have submitted notices for an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha and invoked Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha, seeking a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative in Bihar.
Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha allows for the suspension of a specific rule to facilitate a motion on a particular issue.
The Opposition has highlighted in their notices that this initiative mandates citizens to present proof of citizenship, which they argue is unconstitutional.
They also expressed concerns that the Election Commission's actions could violate parliamentary rights, as Article 11 grants Parliament the authority to legislate on citizenship matters.
Parties within the INDIA bloc have been vocal about their demand for a discussion on the SIR and have organized numerous protests both inside and outside Parliament during the current Monsoon session.
Additionally, the Opposition is planning a march to the Election Commission of India headquarters next week.
