What’s Behind the Heated Exchange Between Education Minister Pradhan and Rahul Gandhi Over CBSE Exams?
Intense Debate Over CBSE Exam Issues
New Delhi: A fierce exchange has erupted between Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the recent controversies surrounding the CBSE examinations. Pradhan has accused Gandhi of politicizing the situation, while Gandhi has countered that such attacks will not absolve the minister of his alleged wrongdoings.
The conflict intensified after Gandhi raised concerns about irregularities in the CBSE examination process, calling for an independent judicial investigation and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to uncover the truth behind what he termed an "entire scam."
Gandhi also pointed out that a company with a questionable history in Telangana was awarded the contract for the digital evaluation of answer sheets by CBSE.
In response, Pradhan criticized Gandhi, suggesting that his frustrations stem from repeated electoral losses. He accused Gandhi of resisting reforms and technological advancements, claiming that he has consistently opposed initiatives like the SIR and Digital India.
Pradhan stated, "Rahul Gandhi seems to be in a different state of mind. His continuous electoral defeats have left him frustrated. He has opposed various technological advancements and does not support India's scientific progress."
The minister reassured that the actions taken by CBSE are in line with the Government of India's procurement policies and promised that any irregularities found would be addressed.
"I take responsibility on behalf of the government for any inconvenience caused, and I urge everyone to refrain from politicizing this issue at this time. Politics can wait," he remarked.
Gandhi retorted, stating, "Dharmendra Pradhan, you can criticize me as much as you want, but it won't free you from your responsibilities. I will continue to demand answers for the 18.5 lakh children affected."
In a post on X, Gandhi questioned the rationale behind awarding the CBSE OSM contract to COEMPT, a company previously embroiled in controversy under its former name, Globarena. He raised several inquiries, including the lack of background checks and the connections between COEMPT's management and the Modi government.
"You either conducted a background check and proceeded regardless, or you failed to conduct one at all. Either way, you are complicit," he stated.
Gandhi further asserted that if Prime Minister Modi genuinely cared about the situation, he would have dismissed Pradhan long ago for jeopardizing the futures of numerous students.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also weighed in, criticizing Pradhan's arrogance and political theatrics amidst the chaos affecting millions of students. He accused Pradhan of mismanagement and corruption within his ministry.
Ramesh claimed that Prime Minister Modi's support has fostered Pradhan's arrogance, stating, "The responsibility for the NEET-CBSE issues lies with the Prime Minister, who has shielded Pradhan even after the 2024 NTA debacle."
Earlier, Pradhan emphasized the importance of minimizing the mental stress on students and examinees. He acknowledged that issues had arisen concerning the CBSE Class 12 examination evaluation process and announced that a re-evaluation would commence.
He noted that approximately 17 lakh students participated in the exam, with each answer sheet securely preserved. In total, there are 98 lakh answer-sheet copies, each containing around 40 pages, resulting in nearly 40 crore scanned pages evaluated for the first time by CBSE through the OSM process.
Pradhan described the OSM system as a "progressive and student-centric" approach, highlighting its adoption by various institutions in India and abroad for enhanced transparency in evaluations.
He explained that this system allows students to access their marks transparently and view their answer sheets directly, addressing any doubts regarding their evaluations.
Pradhan acknowledged that some discrepancies had been identified but assured that they would be resolved and that no student's concerns would go unanswered.
The CBSE has stated that its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system is supported by a "secure and robust IT platform," which has undergone security audits and is backed by a strong digital infrastructure.
Earlier, Gandhi remarked that CBSE students and their parents are suffering due to the current situation, while Prime Minister Modi remains silent.
