What’s at Stake in the Upcoming US-Russia Talks? EU's Kaja Kallas Weighs In!
EU's Stance on US-Russia Negotiations
Brussels: Kaja Kallas, the foreign policy chief of the European Union, emphasized that any potential agreement between the United States and Russia should involve both Ukraine and the EU. This statement comes as the two nations gear up for discussions regarding a ceasefire in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.
Kallas stated, “It is essential that any arrangement between the US and Russia incorporates Ukraine and the EU, as it pertains to the security of Ukraine and all of Europe.”
To strategize on future actions, Kallas announced plans to hold an online meeting with EU foreign ministers on Monday, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Scheduled for August 15, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska to deliberate on a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, marking their first dialogue since 2021.
Earlier on Saturday, European leaders collectively asserted in a statement that any diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine crisis must safeguard the crucial security interests of both Ukraine and Europe.
This joint statement was issued by prominent leaders including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
The leaders underscored that essential interests encompass the necessity for strong and credible security assurances that empower Ukraine to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity effectively.
They concluded that the route to enduring peace and security in Ukraine hinges on a blend of proactive diplomacy, ongoing support for Ukraine, and sustained pressure on Russia.
