Lok Sabha Set to Vote on Women's Quota Legislation

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha is scheduled to conduct voting on three significant bills aimed at amending the women's quota law and establishing a delimitation commission at 4 PM on Friday, as announced by Speaker Om Birla.

Birla indicated that the discussion on these bills would last approximately 15 to 18 hours, culminating in the voting session.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju proposed a 12-hour debate on the legislation, although he noted that the Speaker would ultimately decide on any extensions.

Previously, Union ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and Amit Shah introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha, which aim to amend the women's quota law and create a delimitation commission, despite opposition protests labeling the proposed laws as unconstitutional.

The bills introduced include 'The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026', 'The Delimitation Bill, 2026', and 'The Union Territories Laws (Amendment Bill), 2026'.

The draft Constitution amendment bill proposes increasing Lok Sabha seats from the current 543 to a maximum of 850 to facilitate the implementation of the women's reservation law ahead of the 2029 parliamentary elections, following a delimitation process based on the 2011 Census.
