Key Details of the 57th GST Council Meeting

New Delhi: The 57th GST Council meeting, led by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is set to take place on Thursday in the capital city.

Originally planned for Wednesday, the meeting was postponed to Thursday due to unforeseen circumstances, as noted in an official memorandum from the GST Council Secretariat.

This gathering, which includes representatives from both the central and state governments, aims to address various process reforms intended to simplify GST compliance for businesses and taxpayers.

Reports suggest that the Council may review modifications to the registration, returns, and refunds processes, alongside reforms to tackle GST disputes and enhance the flow of input tax credits, all with the goal of minimizing compliance time and costs.

These proposals are part of the broader recommendations from the GST Council's Law Committee, which is exploring ways to streamline GST regulations and differentiate between intentional tax evasion and unintentional non-compliance.

Currently, under the GST framework, the Commissioner has the authority to authorize arrests under Section 69 of the Central GST Act if there is evidence of specific offenses outlined in Section 132, which includes cases of tax evasion and fraudulent input tax credits.

The Council is also anticipated to discuss initiatives aimed at easing compliance for businesses, particularly e-commerce suppliers.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicated that the next phase of GST reforms would focus on simplifying compliance and enhancing the refund process, thereby boosting business confidence for investment and expansion.

Finance Minister Sitharaman echoed this sentiment, stating that the upcoming reforms would prioritize the simplification of registration, returns, refunds, dispute resolution, and input tax credit processes.

Initially scheduled for September 12, the GST Council meeting was rescheduled to October 7 due to the BRICS summit that India hosted in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
