Modi Set to Attend G7 Summit in Canada

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that he will participate in the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada, expressing eagerness to meet the newly elected Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney.

During a phone conversation, PM Modi expressed gratitude to Carney for the invitation to the summit, which is set to take place from June 15-17 in Kananaskis.

On social media platform X, Modi shared, "I was pleased to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. I congratulated him on his recent electoral success and thanked him for inviting me to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month."

He further stated, "As vibrant democracies with strong people-to-people connections, India and Canada will collaborate with renewed energy, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. I look forward to our meeting at the Summit."

Relations between India and Canada had soured under Carney's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, due to various issues, including the activities of Khalistani separatists within Canada.

Trudeau had accused India of being involved in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a radical Khalistani activist.

As tensions escalated, diplomatic relations between the two nations were significantly downgraded.

The G7, comprising the world's seven wealthiest nations, has extended invitations to India to attend the prestigious summit since 2019.

The anticipated meeting between Modi and Carney, who became the leader of the ruling Liberal Party after Trudeau's resignation amid declining party fortunes, has sparked hopes for improved relations between the two countries. Carney was elected Prime Minister during snap elections held in March this year.

The G7 group includes the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada.
