What to Expect from PM Modi's Brief UK Visit: Key Highlights and FTA Insights
Modi's UK Visit: A Step Towards Strengthening Ties
London: The recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the UK underscores his dedication to enhancing bilateral relations, particularly with the anticipated Free Trade Agreement (FTA), as highlighted by India's High Commissioner, Vikram Doraiswami, on Tuesday.
In an interview at India House in London, Doraiswami noted that the FTA document is currently undergoing final legal reviews to ensure it accurately reflects the agreements reached during negotiations that concluded on May 6.
The FTA aims to significantly boost bilateral trade to USD 120 billion by 2030 and is expected to be officially signed during Modi's meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday.
"We are in the process of finalizing it; our goal is to ensure the Free Trade Agreement is successfully concluded," Doraiswami stated.
"This is indeed a comprehensive and ambitious document, likely our most significant FTA to date. It requires meticulous attention to detail to ensure it encompasses all agreed aspects and meets expectations. Its implementation will greatly influence both economies and foster growth in both nations," he added.
The envoy emphasized that once the FTA is ratified by the UK Parliament, it will provide businesses with a more stable framework, highlighting that it encompasses more than just tariff reductions; it also aims to enhance trade terms.
"The agreement includes customs regulations regarding rules of origin, government procurement, and a substantial focus on services, which are vital to both the British and Indian economies," he explained.
Regarding the brief nature of the UK visit before Modi heads to the Maldives, Doraiswami acknowledged that the High Commission and the large Indian diaspora would have preferred a more elaborate tour. However, he reiterated that this visit signifies a strong commitment to nurturing the India-UK partnership.
"The Prime Minister's dedication to this relationship should reassure our diaspora that the UK remains a crucial partner, as he is willing to travel such a distance for just 24 hours to advance this relationship. That is quite remarkable," he remarked.
"The Prime Minister has always believed in strengthening ties with key partners. His readiness to undertake a long journey for a brief yet focused visit, even during Parliament sessions, indicates his priority in elevating this relationship beyond its current state," he added.
Accompanied by a business delegation, Modi is also set to meet King Charles III at a royal estate. During his previous visit in 2018, Modi and the then Prince of Wales inaugurated an Ayurvedic Centre of Excellence.
"Given their past discussions and their holistic views on healthcare and environmental issues, I would expect them to touch upon these topics," Doraiswami noted.
Modi is anticipated to arrive on Wednesday evening local time, ahead of a busy schedule with Starmer on Thursday, when the FTA is expected to be formally endorsed.
Following his meeting with the British monarch, the Prime Minister will travel to the Maldives, where he will be the Guest of Honour at the island nation's 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26.
