What to Expect from Modi and Trump's Crucial Talks at G7 Summit?
Key Discussions on the Horizon
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump are set to engage in extensive discussions on Wednesday, primarily aimed at accelerating the finalization of a proposed trade agreement and enhancing collaboration in defense, energy, and critical minerals sectors.
Their meeting comes after a brief interaction at a G7 leaders' gathering, marking their first face-to-face encounter in over 16 months amidst ongoing tensions in their bilateral relationship.
Both leaders are currently in Evian-les-Bains, France, for the G7 summit, where they last met in person at the White House in February 2025, shortly after Trump's second inauguration.
The recent visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to India has paved the way for efforts to mend the strained ties between the two nations.
Relations have soured significantly following the imposition of tariffs by Washington and Trump's controversial claims regarding his role in de-escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan last May.
Trump's repeated assertions that he had a hand in resolving the conflict, which he claimed was on the brink of escalating into a full-scale war, were firmly rejected by New Delhi, which maintained that the resolution was achieved through direct talks between India and Pakistan.
Additionally, the US's new immigration policies and increased fees for H-1B visas have further strained relations.
Despite these challenges, both nations have made strides in recent months to restore their partnership and are working towards a mutually beneficial trade agreement.
Tensions flared again last week when three Indian sailors lost their lives due to US military actions against merchant vessels near Oman.
During a G7 outreach session, Modi emphasized the importance of securing maritime routes and ensuring the safety of seafarers.
Following the incident, New Delhi summoned the US chargé d'affaires, Jason Meeks, to express its discontent over the US military's 'lethal and deadly' strikes on commercial vessels with Indian crew members.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also addressed the matter with Rubio, as the US Central Command reported actions taken against three vessels allegedly violating a blockade of Iranian ports.
In their upcoming meeting, Modi and Trump are expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations, including ongoing trade negotiations and defense cooperation initiatives.
The anticipated trade pact is seen as a significant step towards a comprehensive agreement, as discussed during Modi's visit to Washington, D.C., last February.
The leaders may also deliberate on critical geopolitical issues such as energy security, the crisis in West Asia, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Modi's attendance at the G7 summit comes as India has been invited as a guest country, joining the ranks of the world's seven most advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union.
