Violence Erupts in Kolkata Amid Political Tensions

Kolkata: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has requested an updated report from the Kolkata Police regarding the violent incidents that took place in Girish Park, North Kolkata. This unrest occurred on March 14, coinciding with clashes between members of the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists, right outside the home of a West Bengal cabinet member.

This outbreak of violence happened on the same day that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the city for a significant rally at Brigade Parade Ground.

According to a source from the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in West Bengal, the Kolkata Police's previous report failed to adequately address why the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), which was already deployed in the city, was not called upon to manage the situation at Girish Park during the incident.

The ECI has expressed strong disapproval regarding the lack of this critical information in the police's report and has instructed the city police to provide a new report addressing this specific concern as soon as possible.

So far, nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the Girish Park clashes.

The BJP has raised concerns about the city police allegedly targeting their party members selectively, asserting that the violence erupted after Trinamool Congress supporters attacked a bus transporting BJP supporters to the Prime Minister's rally.

Conversely, Trinamool Congress supporters have claimed that stones were thrown at the residence of Minister Dr. Sashi Panja during the altercation, alleging that BJP activists were responsible for these actions while heading to the rally.

The state minister has also reported being attacked during the chaos, while the BJP countered that Trinamool workers hurled bricks at their activists as they marched through Girish Park.
