Major Rally in Leh Amid Calls for Statehood

Hundreds gathered in Leh for a significant rally, held under strict security measures, while Kargil observed a complete shutdown on Monday. This action was initiated by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) to advocate for statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh.

This rally marked the first major demonstration by the LAB since the unrest that occurred during protests in September, which led to a government crackdown. The event took place shortly after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was released from nearly six months of detention under the National Security Act (NSA).

Ladakh's Director General of Police, Mukesh Singh, monitored the rally at Singay Namgyal Chowk, ensuring that additional police forces were present throughout the town to uphold public safety.

The protest, led by LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay, began at Singay Namgyal Chowk and proceeded to the Leh polo ground. Many participants, including a significant number of women, chanted slogans advocating for their demands for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule.

Some attendees carried images of four individuals who lost their lives during a previous LAB-sponsored protest that turned violent last September.

In response to the joint call from LAB and KDA, Kargil and the nearby Drass region observed a total shutdown, reflecting the ongoing agitation for statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion that has persisted for five years.

Officials reported no incidents of violence during the rally.

Speaking to the media in Leh, Dorjay expressed gratitude to the community for their strong turnout despite roadblocks and administrative restrictions. He praised the people of Ladakh for maintaining peace in the face of provocation, calling the rally a 'significant success.'

Dorjay emphasized that the public's support for the Apex Body is evident, countering claims that the organization lacks popular backing.

Wangchuk, a key figure in the movement, had been detained under the NSA in September for allegedly inciting violence during protests. The government announced on Saturday that Wangchuk's detention was revoked to promote 'constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.'
