India's Diplomatic Stance Amid Political Controversy

New Delhi: On Friday, India reaffirmed its robust relationship with Italy, highlighting the necessity of mutual respect in public discussions. This statement came in the wake of a political controversy ignited by a Congress leader's remarks directed at Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

During a bi-weekly media briefing, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed inquiries regarding Rahul Gandhi's critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy approach, which was followed by comments from Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit.

"Our relationship with Italy is strong and has seen significant growth in recent years. It is crucial that we enhance our diplomatic ties while maintaining respect for one another," Jaiswal stated.

At an event on Thursday, Gandhi mocked Modi's foreign policy, suggesting it revolved around physical gestures like hugging world leaders.

The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha remarked that Modi seems to believe that foreign relations are merely about embracing leaders.

To illustrate his point, Gandhi hugged Dikshit, saying, "Imagine the ignorance... where did he get the notion that foreign policy is about hugging leaders?"

In response, Dikshit questioned Gandhi, asking, "Can I ask you something? Was Meloni not understood?"

Gandhi replied, "I haven't gotten there yet."

The BJP has strongly criticized both Gandhi and Dikshit for their remarks.
