What New Opportunities Await in India-Switzerland Relations? PM Modi Welcomes Swiss President Guy Parmelin
Strengthening Ties: PM Modi and Swiss President Discuss Future Collaborations
New Delhi: On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Swiss President Guy Parmelin for comprehensive discussions aimed at enhancing the bilateral relationship between India and Switzerland, focusing on trade, investment, mobility, and critical technologies.
Parmelin's three-day visit to India commenced this morning, marking his inaugural state visit to the country and his second trip this year, having previously attended the AI Impact Summit in February.
Upon his arrival in the capital, the Swiss President received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan's forecourt. He also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
According to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, "A significant agenda is set for discussion as both leaders will explore various aspects of the India-Switzerland partnership and identify new avenues for collaboration." Prior to the talks with PM Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged with Parmelin to discuss multiple facets of their bilateral relations.
Following their meeting, Jaishankar expressed his gratitude for President Parmelin's commitment to enhancing the India-Switzerland partnership, particularly in light of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).
The TEPA, which was finalized in March 2024 after nearly 16 years of negotiations, aims to foster economic ties between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
This agreement anticipates an investment of USD 100 billion from EFTA nations, including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, into India over the next 15 years.
The trade agreement, which took effect in October of the previous year, is projected to significantly enhance trade relations between India and Switzerland.
Currently, more than 330 Swiss firms operate in India across various sectors, including engineering, services, precision instruments, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, while Indian enterprises are active in Switzerland in IT, pharmaceuticals, and machinery.
During his visit, Parmelin is also scheduled to meet with President Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet in his honor.
