Investigation Launched into Vedanta Power Plant Incident

New Delhi: A central investigation team, including officials from the Department of Industrial Safety and Boiler Inspectors, is set to initiate an inquiry into the tragic incident at the Vedanta power facility located in Dabhra tehsil, Sakti district, Chhattisgarh. This accident resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries among workers.

Reports indicate that the team is scheduled to arrive in Sakti from Delhi on Saturday to commence their investigation.

This action follows the submission of a report by the State Boiler Inspector, prompting central authorities to intervene.

In parallel, the Chhattisgarh government has mandated its own investigation into the Vedanta incident, appointing the Bilaspur Divisional Commissioner as the inquiry officer.

The explosion occurred on April 14 in Boiler Unit-1, attributed to a technical malfunction in the joint of a water supply pipe linked to a steam pipeline. The death toll from the boiler explosion has tragically risen to 20, with 15 workers currently receiving treatment for their injuries in various hospitals.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the state government has instructed that the inquiry will assess the timeline and circumstances of the accident, identify the root causes, and recommend preventive measures to avert similar incidents in the future.

The inquiry officer has been tasked with completing the investigation within 30 days and reporting back to the state government.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing it as a deeply tragic event. He has paid homage to the deceased workers and extended condolences to their families. The Chief Minister has also urged officials to ensure a thorough and prompt inquiry, with strict actions against those deemed responsible.

A preliminary technical assessment by the Chief Boiler Inspector pointed to excessive fuel accumulation within the furnace, which caused pressure build-up and damage to the associated pipelines. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Sakti has confirmed these findings, identifying fuel overload as the main cause of the explosion.
