Unexpected Resignation of West Bengal Governor

Kolkata: In a surprising turn of events, just days before the announcement of assembly elections in West Bengal, Governor CV Ananda Bose submitted his resignation in New Delhi on Thursday evening.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock at the news, revealing that R N Ravi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu and former deputy NSA, will take over the responsibilities of West Bengal following Bose's departure.

Bose, who took office as the governor on November 17, 2022, confirmed his resignation to PTI, stating, "Yes, I have resigned. I have served as the Governor of Bengal for three-and-a-half years; that is sufficient for me."

However, he did not provide any reasons for his abrupt resignation or indicate if political pressure influenced his decision.

Banerjee mentioned on her social media that she learned from Union Home Minister Amit Shah about Ravi's appointment as the new governor.

She suggested that Bose's resignation might have been compelled by pressure from Shah, especially with the assembly elections approaching.

In a post on X, Banerjee expressed her shock and concern regarding the unexpected development, stating that she was unaware of the reasons behind it.

She remarked, "The reasons for his resignation are currently unknown to me. However, considering the situation, I wouldn't be surprised if the Governor faced some pressure from the Union Home Minister to fulfill specific political agendas ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections."

Banerjee further claimed that while Shah informed her about Ravi's appointment, she was not consulted beforehand, which she noted is contrary to established conventions.

She stated, "The Union Home Minister merely informed me that Shri R.N. Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He did not consult me as per the established convention in this regard."

Banerjee emphasized that such actions undermine the essence of the Constitution and threaten the foundation of the nation's federal structure.

She urged the Centre to honor the principles of cooperative federalism and avoid unilateral decisions that could diminish democratic norms and the dignity of states.
