What Led to the Sudden End of Parliament's Special Session? A Deep Dive into the Women's Reservation Bill Controversy
Parliament's Special Session Concludes Abruptly
New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha sessions were adjourned sine die shortly after commencing on Saturday, effectively concluding the Parliament's Special Session.
On the previous day, the Lok Sabha rejected the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026.
This legislation aimed to allocate 33 percent of parliamentary seats to women but failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority, leading to a significant political clash between the ruling NDA and the Opposition INDIA coalition.
Despite extensive debate, the proposed bill, which also intended to increase the House's size, garnered only 278 votes in favor and 211 against, falling short of the required threshold.
Following this setback, the government opted not to proceed with two associated Bills regarding delimitation, indicating that these three Bills should be considered separately.
In the meantime, Opposition leaders convened in the chamber of Congress National President and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge within the Parliament Complex.
The failure of the Bill has intensified political tensions, with the NDA accusing the INDIA bloc of obstructing a crucial reform aimed at enhancing women's representation in legislative bodies.
Conversely, the Opposition is contesting the linkage of the Women’s Reservation Bill to the expansion of Parliament based on the 2011 Census and the delimitation process.
Earlier on Friday, NDA floor leaders held an important meeting in Parliament following the Bill's defeat.
Sources indicate that it was resolved in this meeting that constituents would highlight the Opposition's resistance to women's empowerment.
The NDA plans to communicate this message nationwide through protests, press conferences, and social media to inform the public about these developments.
A nationwide protest campaign is set to be launched by the NDA on Saturday against the INDIA bloc regarding this issue.
Party officials stated that demonstrations would be organized at district headquarters across the country, spearheaded by the BJP's women's wing, the BJP Mahila Morcha.
This campaign aims to underscore what the NDA characterizes as an 'anti-women agenda' of the Opposition while rallying public support around the issue. The BJP is also expected to prominently feature this topic in the upcoming elections, particularly in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
