What Led to the Resignation of Punjab Congress Chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring?
Punjab Congress Leadership Shake-Up
New Delhi: The Punjab Congress is experiencing significant turmoil as Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the outgoing state unit president, described his resignation as a triumph for former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
Warring revealed that he had been informed of Sachin Pilot's desire for his replacement, yet he chose to step down voluntarily.
He emphasized that no one pressured him to resign; it was a decision he made independently.
Following Warring's resignation, the Congress party appointed Pargat Singh, a former Indian hockey captain, as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.
Warring met with former party president Rahul Gandhi to formally submit his resignation, marking the end of his four-year tenure leading the state Congress, just ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
His resignation was preceded by ongoing internal conflicts within the state unit, with calls for his removal from Channi and other party leaders.
Warring stated, "No one asked me to resign. I recognized the situation had escalated, and when I felt it was time, I voluntarily resigned and updated my social media to reflect my new status as 'former PCC president.'"
He added, "Perhaps Sachin Pilot believed it was unsuitable for me to remain as PCC president. Channi Sahib has emerged victorious."
Warring mentioned that he had provided feedback to party leadership over the past four and a half years, and Pilot might have shared new insights with the party. "It seems Sachin ji wanted me to be removed," he noted.
The Ludhiana MP shared that he discussed various personal and family matters with Rahul Gandhi, alongside Punjab's political landscape, and found the discussions to be constructive.
He preferred to keep internal party matters off-camera.
Warring expressed confidence in the Punjab cadre, stating, "We have established a robust organizational structure from the grassroots to the state level. The Congress remains strong at the local level."
Recently, the Congress replaced its AICC in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, who had spent considerable time in Punjab attempting to mend factional disputes, appointing Pilot in his stead.
Former state minister Vijay Inder Singla is already a frontrunner to take over as the new party chief in Punjab, also serving as a co-treasurer of AICC and managing the party's assets.
After meeting with Gandhi, Warring remarked, "I met Rahul Gandhi and formally submitted my resignation."
"He (Rahul Gandhi) showed me great affection and inquired about the current political climate in Punjab, what is happening with the government, and what actions we should take. This was the information he sought," he told reporters.
Warring conveyed to Gandhi the challenges facing Congress in Punjab, as well as its strengths.
"I discussed our challenges and how we must confront them, along with where our strengths lie. He appointed me as the state Congress chief, and I expressed my gratitude for the opportunity to lead during challenging times. I assured him of my readiness to serve the party whenever needed," Warring stated.
When questioned about the internal strife that led to the leadership change, AICC in-charge for Rajasthan Sukhjinder Randhawa remarked, "Those who caused divisions should reflect on their actions."
"I take responsibility, as does Warring and other Congress leaders, for creating circumstances that should have been avoided," he added.
