Minister's Response to the Bargi Dam Incident

Bhopal/Jabalpur: Dharmendra Singh Lodhi, the Culture and Tourism Minister of Madhya Pradesh, expressed his deep sorrow regarding the recent cruise disaster at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur. He acknowledged that while a sudden storm was the catalyst for the vessel's sinking, there may have been negligence involved.

In an exclusive interview following the conclusion of a four-day search operation, Lodhi discussed the government's stance, the ongoing investigation, and the immediate measures taken in response to the tragedy.

He emphasized that the state government is approaching the situation with seriousness and transparency, assuring that accountability will be established once the inquiry is finalized.

Lodhi remarked, "This incident is indeed tragic, and it is clear that negligence played a part," indicating the government's willingness to identify any lapses.

He elaborated that negligence could stem from failures in enforcing safety measures, monitoring weather conditions, or ensuring the cruise's operational readiness.

The Minister revealed that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has formed a high-level inquiry committee tasked with delivering a comprehensive report within a week.

The investigation aims to scrutinize all aspects, from administrative oversights to technical and operational concerns.

Lodhi stated, "Immediate actions have been taken against individuals whose negligence has been identified during the preliminary inquiry. Strict measures will follow for anyone found culpable after the complete investigation."

Addressing rumors about overcrowding, he dismissed the notion that excess passengers were solely responsible for the tragedy. He clarified that the cruise had a capacity exceeding 60 individuals, stating, "It would be misleading to attribute the incident solely to passenger numbers."

Instead, he pointed to the unexpected and severe storm as the primary cause of the accident. "A fierce storm hit, leading to the cruise sinking. However, negligence must also be acknowledged," he noted, stressing that while natural factors initiated the incident, human errors may have exacerbated its consequences.

Questions have arisen regarding whether the cruise should have been operational during such weather and if adequate safety protocols were in place.

Lodhi also mentioned that the investigation is looking into potential technical flaws in the vessel. Authorities are assessing whether the cruise complied with all necessary safety and maintenance standards for passenger operations. "An investigation is currently underway to ascertain if there were any technical issues with the cruise ship; the complete truth will soon be revealed," he assured, promising that the findings will be disclosed.

In light of the incident, the Minister announced a suspension of all cruise operations across Madhya Pradesh as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety and rebuild public trust.

"Orders have been issued for official teams to conduct thorough inspections. Each cruise vessel will be examined, detailed reports will be compiled, and further operational decisions will be made only afterward," he stated.

Regarding the political reactions to the tragedy, Lodhi called for restraint and responsibility. "This is a devastating tragedy, and it should not be politicized," he urged, adding that while inquiries are natural in such circumstances, they should focus on rectifying systemic issues rather than seeking political advantage.

He affirmed that both the government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have responded with empathy, noting that the Chief Minister personally visited the site and met with affected families.
