What Led to DMK's Stunning Defeat in Tamil Nadu Elections?
DMK Faces Major Electoral Loss in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: The DMK has encountered a significant electoral defeat in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, securing victory in only about 59 out of the 164 constituencies it contested, resulting in a shift to the Opposition.
The elections featured a competitive three-way battle among the DMK, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and AIADMK, with the ruling party unable to maintain its previous stronghold due to a notable rise in support for TVK.
The results were particularly surprising, as Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with several senior ministers and the Assembly Speaker, faced defeat, indicating a strong anti-incumbency sentiment throughout the state.
Notable losses included Health Minister M. Subramanian, who was defeated in Saidapet by nearly 28,500 votes, and School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who lost in Tiruverumbur.
Minister T.R.B. Rajaa was defeated in Mannargudi, while Minister Moorthy lost Madurai East by over 16,500 votes.
Finance Minister P.T.R. Palanivel Thiagarajan unexpectedly lost in Madurai Central, where a TVK candidate triumphed in a multi-cornered contest.
Other senior ministers also faced defeats across various regions, including K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran in Aruppukkottai and Thangam Thennarasu in his constituency.
Veteran leader Durai Murugan lost in Katpadi by more than 7,600 votes, and Minister Muthusamy was defeated in Erode West by over 22,000 votes.
Ministers Nassar (Avadi), Mathivendhan (Rasipuram), R. Rajendran (Salem North), Gandhi (Ranipet), and Saminathan (Kangeyam) were also among those who did not secure their seats.
In Alandur, T.M. Anbarasan lost by a margin exceeding 25,000 votes.
One of the closest races occurred in Tiruppattur, where Minister Periyakaruppan lost by just a single vote, showcasing the highly competitive nature of this election.
Despite the widespread defeats, some DMK leaders managed to retain their positions. Udhayanidhi Stalin won in Chepauk with a margin of over 7,300 votes, and Minister Sekarbabu emerged victorious in Harbour.
K.N. Nehru held onto his seat in Tiruchirappalli West, while I. Periyasamy achieved a strong win in Athoor.
Chakrapani won from Oddanchatram with a comfortable margin, and E.V. Velu narrowly retained his seat in Tiruvannamalai.
Ministers M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Meyyanathan, C.V. Ganesan, and K. Chezhiyan also secured victories, along with Anita Radhakrishnan in Tiruchendur and Raghupathi, Sivashankar, and Rajakannappan in their respective constituencies.
These results signify a substantial shift in Tamil Nadu's political dynamics, with the rise of TVK altering traditional voting behaviors and diminishing the influence of both DMK and AIADMK.
While the DMK managed to win a limited number of seats, the scale of high-profile losses highlights the challenges the party faces as it transitions to the Opposition after its time in power.
