JNU Responds to Controversial Protest

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has expressed serious concern regarding videos from a recent protest where the students' union allegedly chanted inflammatory and provocative slogans. The university views these actions as a blatant disregard for constitutional institutions.

Following the protest, which took place during an event called 'A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba,' the university has requested the police to file a First Information Report (FIR) against those involved. The event, held around 10 PM, was initially intended to commemorate a past incident but escalated after a court ruling on the bail applications of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.

The administration's letter to the Vasant Kunj (North) police station highlighted that the protest, attended by approximately 30 to 35 students, shifted in tone, leading to the chanting of slogans that the university deemed objectionable.

The registrar's statement emphasized the importance of distinguishing between legitimate dissent and hate speech, warning that such behavior could lead to public disorder. The university has urged all parties to refrain from engaging in disruptive activities and to help maintain campus peace.

In its communication with the Delhi Police, JNU pointed out that the slogans raised were not only provocative but also in contempt of the Supreme Court. The administration has identified several students involved, including the current JNUSU president, Aditi Mishra, asserting that their actions could severely disrupt campus harmony and public order.

Security personnel were present during the protest and monitored the situation closely. The chief security officer has formally requested the police to take action under relevant legal provisions.
