Counting of votes for by-elections across seven Assembly seats in five states commenced on Monday, with the outcomes likely to influence significant political dynamics in various regions.
The bypolls took place on April 9 and April 23 in constituencies located in Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura. These elections were prompted by the passing of incumbent MLAs, resulting in closely monitored races among major political factions.
In Maharashtra, the Baramati seat in Pune district has garnered considerable attention, being a bastion of the prominent Pawar family. This seat became vacant following the tragic death of MLA Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28. His wife, Sunetra Pawar, who is a leader in the NCP and serves as Deputy Chief Minister, is contesting in this high-profile election.
Karnataka's bypolls were conducted in Bagalkot and Davanagere South due to the deaths of senior Congress MLAs H Y Meti and Shamanur Shivashankarappa. These contests are perceived as a significant battle for prestige between the ruling Congress and the BJP.
The BJP has nominated Veerabhadrayya Charantimath for Bagalkot and Srinivas T Dasakariyappa for Davanagere South, while the Congress has put forth Umesh Meti and Samarth Mallikarjun for these seats.
In Gujarat, the Umreth seat in Anand district was contested following the death of BJP MLA Govind Parmar. The primary competition is between BJP candidate Harshad Parmar, the late MLA's son, and Congress's Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, along with other contenders.
Nagaland's Koridang seat in Mokokchung district featured a multi-cornered contest after the passing of BJP MLA Imkong L Imchen. Six candidates are competing, including BJP’s Daochier I Imchen, who is also the consensus candidate of the ruling coalition, alongside Congress, NPP, and Independent candidates.
In Tripura, the Dharmanagar seat saw a triangular contest among the BJP, Congress, and the CPI(M)-led Left Front following the death of Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen in December. Key candidates include BJP’s Jahar Chakraborti, Congress’s Chayan Bhattacharjee, and CPI(M)’s Amitabha Datta.
Additionally, the Bombay High Court canceled the scheduled bypoll in Goa’s Ponda constituency just hours before the voting was set to begin.
