Investigation Findings on Justice Yashwant Varma

New Delhi: A committee established by the Lok Sabha Speaker to investigate allegations regarding the discovery of cash at Justice Yashwant Varma's official residence has determined that the claims of unexplained cash, concerning evidence, and evasive responses against him are substantiated.

In a report presented to both houses of Parliament on Wednesday, the three-member committee, formed under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, stated that Justice Varma did not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the origin, presence, or ownership of the cash found in the storeroom of his official residence.

The panel noted that crucial evidence was neither secured nor preserved, and the condition of the storeroom was compromised before it could be lawfully sealed and inspected.

Furthermore, the committee found that Justice Varma's explanations lacked the candor, transparency, and institutional accountability expected in such situations.

The report indicated that his responses were evasive and inadequate when compared to the testimonies of independent official witnesses and corroborative evidence.

Consequently, the committee concluded that the charges outlined in Articles I, II, and III have been substantiated, as stated in their final report submitted to Parliament.

The comprehensive report consists of two volumes, including both oral and documentary evidence collected during the investigation.

The findings were submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in May by the three-member probe panel.

Following pressure from nearly 200 MPs for his removal, Justice Varma has since resigned, although the law ministry has yet to officially notify his resignation.

A fire incident occurred at Justice Varma's official residence on the night of March 14, 2025, during which firefighters reportedly discovered significant amounts of burnt currency in a storeroom.

With Justice Varma's resignation, the proceedings for his removal have effectively become moot.
