New Delhi: During the opening of the two-day BRICS summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the necessity for the Global South to take a more active role in shaping global rules to address pressing challenges. The summit aims to discuss how developing nations can safeguard their interests amid the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

In his inaugural address, Modi highlighted that BRICS has carved out a unique position on the world stage, asserting that the group is not positioned against any particular nation, a statement interpreted as a subtle nod towards the United States and its allies.

He pointed out that while the Global South is at the forefront of global crises, it remains sidelined in decision-making processes. Modi called for a shift from a 'pyramid of privilege' to a 'platform of partnership' where every nation has a voice and a stake in global development.

To this end, he proposed the creation of ten proposals aimed at reforming global governance, with the goal of establishing a BRICS reform agenda by the next summit.

Modi's remarks were made in the presence of several world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, among others.

He also urged for urgent reforms to the United Nations Security Council, stating that the current governance structure is outdated and decision-making is overly centralized.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the Global South must evolve into a rule-shaping entity to effectively tackle the myriad challenges it faces.

Additionally, he suggested the establishment of a network for seafarers among BRICS nations to enhance their safety.
