Strengthening Ties Between India and Finland


New Delhi: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the shared values of India and Finland regarding the importance of law, dialogue, and diplomacy, particularly in relation to the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine.


During a joint press conference with Finnish President Alexander Stubb at Hyderabad House, PM Modi highlighted the necessity of reforming global institutions to effectively tackle worldwide challenges.


He stated, "Both India and Finland are aligned in our belief that military solutions are not the answer to conflicts. We will support all initiatives aimed at swiftly resolving these issues and restoring peace. Furthermore, we recognize the urgent need for reform in global institutions to combat terrorism in all its forms, which is a commitment we share."


PM Modi also acknowledged President Stubb's achievement in completing the Ironman Triathlon, expressing confidence that under such dynamic leadership, both nations would excel in innovation, digital advancements, and sustainability.


He pointed out that the increasing collaboration between India and Europe is enhancing global stability and prosperity, referencing the recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between India and the European Union.


In his remarks, PM Modi noted, "The current global landscape is marked by instability and uncertainty, with conflicts persisting from Ukraine to West Asia. In this context, India and Europe, as significant diplomatic forces, are entering a promising phase in their relationship. Our enhanced cooperation is vital for fostering global stability and shared prosperity. The historic FTA signed at the start of 2026 will bolster trade, investment, and technological collaboration between India and Finland."


Additionally, PM Modi announced a comprehensive migration and mobility agreement aimed at linking the innovation ecosystems of both countries. He mentioned plans to enhance cooperation in teacher training, school partnerships, and educational futures.


Finland is increasingly recognized as a favored destination for Indian students and professionals. PM Modi remarked, "With the new migration and mobility agreement, we aim to strengthen joint research and startup initiatives between our nations."


He praised Finland as a model for education and reiterated the commitment to deepen research collaboration in teacher training and educational partnerships, stating, "This initiative will enhance our cooperation across all levels of human development, from education to industry. Finland is a key partner for India in the Nordic region, and we are also expanding our collaboration in Arctic and polar research."
