Strengthening Ties with the Maldives
During his two-day visit to the Maldives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India's eagerness to enhance its collaboration with the island nation. He engaged with key Maldivian officials, including Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed.
In his discussions with Latheef, Modi emphasized the foundational aspects of India-Maldives relations.
He stated on X, "Our countries are actively collaborating in various sectors such as infrastructure, technology, climate change, and energy, which significantly benefits our citizens. We anticipate further strengthening this partnership in the future."
Modi also met with Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the Speaker of the People's Majlis, where they discussed the enduring friendship between India and the Maldives, particularly the strong ties between their legislative bodies.
He welcomed the establishment of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Majlis.
The Prime Minister reiterated India's commitment to aiding the Maldives in capacity building.
Additionally, he had a conversation with former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, who has been a proponent of a closer India-Maldives relationship. Modi remarked on the Maldives' importance as a key component of India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and Mahasagar vision.
Nasheed served as the Maldives' president from November 11, 2008, to February 7, 2012.
Modi assured that India would continue to support the Maldives through developmental cooperation and capacity building initiatives.
On the previous day, he had extensive discussions with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, during which he announced a substantial line of credit amounting to Rs 4,850 crore for the Maldives.
