Investigation into Textbook Errors in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A committee consisting of three members has completed its investigation into the inaccuracies found in school textbooks in Odisha and has presented its findings to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. This report may lead to potential consequences for the officials involved in these errors.

The committee, led by Development Commissioner Deo Ranjan Kumar Singh, managed to finalize its report within a week, adhering to the set deadline.

This investigation was initiated after over 1,600 mistakes were identified in the textbooks used for the current academic year for students in Classes I to VIII. The situation has sparked outrage among educators, parents, and opposition parties. Following this, CM Majhi instructed the committee to pinpoint the officials and organizations accountable for the publication of these erroneous materials and to deliver a report promptly.

Some of the notable errors include misidentifying Sir Isaac Newton as a ‘great pilot’ rather than a renowned scientist, using an image of Karnataka’s Vidhan Soudha instead of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, and incorrectly labeling Hampi’s iconic stone chariot as the Konark Sun Temple. Additional inaccuracies pertain to Odisha’s geography, history, and cultural heritage. The Odisha Parents’ Federation has condemned the release of these flawed textbooks, calling it a significant failure of the educational system.
