Allegations Surface Against Trinamool Congress Leader

Kolkata: On Saturday, two distinct complaints were lodged against Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Lok Sabha member, at separate police stations across West Bengal.

The first complaint was registered at the Siliguri Cyber Police Station, located in the Darjeeling district. A businessman named Sanjay Kumar Singhal accused Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, of inciting post-election violence during various campaign rallies leading up to the recent state Assembly elections.

Singhal's complaint highlighted that Banerjee's remarks during these rallies could provoke political animosity, urging the police to investigate thoroughly and take necessary legal actions.

The second complaint was filed at the Bishnupur Police Station in South 24 Parganas by Avijit Das, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and candidate who ran against Banerjee in both the 2019 and 2024 elections for the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat.

Das accused Banerjee of corruption related to the distribution of relief materials to victims of Cyclone Amphan, which devastated South 24 Parganas in May 2020. He requested the formation of a Special Investigation Team to probe the allegations.

Banerjee is scheduled to be interrogated by two investigative agencies over three consecutive days, from June 14 to 16. On June 14, he will appear at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters for questioning regarding discrepancies in signatures of party legislators on a significant resolution about opposition leader appointments in the state Assembly.

This will mark the second round of questioning in this case, following an extensive interrogation he faced previously.

On June 15, he is expected to meet with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at its Salt Lake office in Kolkata concerning a high-profile cash-for-school-job scandal, for which he received a notice on June 3.

Finally, on June 16, Banerjee will return to the CID headquarters to address accusations of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah ahead of the recent state Assembly elections, following a notice served to him by CID officials.
