Israel and US Align on Iran Strategy
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Wednesday that Israel and the United States share common objectives regarding the ongoing tensions with Iran. He emphasized that the US has kept Israel informed about its discussions with Iran, highlighting a mutual desire to eliminate enriched materials, halt Iran's enrichment activities, and restore crucial maritime routes.
Netanyahu remarked, "Our goals align with those of the United States. We aim to see the removal of enriched materials from Iran, the cancellation of its enrichment capabilities, and the reopening of the straits." He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the situation's outcome and indicated that Israel is prepared for various scenarios as the fragile ceasefire between Iran and the US-Israel coalition approaches its end on April 22.
As clashes intensified between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, Netanyahu assured that military operations against militant targets would continue while supporting residents in northern Israel. He expressed solidarity with the northern residents, stating, "I stand by the residents of the north who are continuing to stand firm. At the same time, our forces are continuing to strike Hezbollah."
Discussing operations in Bint Jbeil, a significant Hezbollah stronghold in southern Lebanon, Netanyahu noted that Israeli forces are close to gaining control of the area, which has been a symbol of Hezbollah's resistance since the 2006 conflict. He described Bint Jbeil as the capital of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
Netanyahu also revealed that he has directed the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) to expand the security zone in southern Lebanon, extending it eastward towards Mount Hermon to better support the Druze community during this challenging time.
In a notable development, Netanyahu confirmed that unprecedented negotiations with Lebanon are taking place, facilitated by the United States, despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations between the two nations. He outlined two primary objectives for these negotiations: disarming Hezbollah and achieving lasting peace.
Meanwhile, the IDF has set forth essential conditions for any agreement, which include creating a buffer zone free of Hezbollah presence up to the Litani River, maintaining operational freedom, and initiating a long-term disarmament process under US oversight.
Despite ongoing negotiations, the Israeli military continues its operations and has not been directed to prepare for a ceasefire. IDF Spokesperson Brig Gen Effie Defrin confirmed that forces remain actively engaged across southern Lebanon, supported by air power. He stated, "We continue to operate at all times, deepening achievements and striking Hezbollah terrorists."
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir reiterated that the military remains on high alert and continues to approve operational plans in both Lebanon and Iran.
