West Indies Maintain Unbeaten Streak

In a commanding performance, the West Indies secured a 107-run victory against Zimbabwe during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Monday. Anil Kumble shared insights on JioHotstar regarding the Windies' strategy and India's prospects in the tournament.

Kumble Analyzes West Indies' Strategy

Kumble praised the West Indies' approach, stating, "The team knows what it takes to succeed at this level. The left-arm spinners were exceptional, particularly Gudakesh Motie, who bowled brilliantly. Unlike many finger spinners, Motie and Akeal Hosein engaged the batters directly."

Shimron Hetmyer's Explosive Innings

Shimron Hetmyer played a pivotal role, scoring 85 runs off just 34 balls, including seven sixes and as many fours. His explosive batting set a formidable target of 255 runs for Zimbabwe.

Kumble remarked on Hetmyer's capabilities, saying, "He has consistently been a finisher, adept at clearing boundaries. His ability to convert starts into significant scores is crucial. Had he been dismissed early, West Indies might not have reached such a high total, allowing Zimbabwe a chance to recover."

Rovman Powell's Impactful Performance

Rovman Powell, the former captain, initially took a cautious approach but accelerated after Hetmyer's exit, scoring 59 runs off 35 balls, featuring four sixes and four fours. His aggressive batting dismantled Zimbabwe's bowling attack.

Kumble noted, "Powell is a proven power-hitter. He took his time at first, but once he found his rhythm, he became unstoppable. His powerful strikes are difficult to field, even when directed at fielders."

Kumble Discusses India's Challenges

Following a loss to South Africa in their opening Super Eight match, India must secure victories in their next two games to remain in contention for the semi-finals. Kumble emphasized the importance of these matches, stating, "Every game is crucial now. The defeat against South Africa was significant, not just in terms of the loss but also the way it happened. The focus must be on a strong comeback against Zimbabwe. India needs to win convincingly to enhance their net run-rate, similar to West Indies' performance. They must also aim to defeat West Indies in the subsequent match."

Upcoming Matches for India

India's next challenge will be against Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.
