West Indies Players Penalized for Code of Conduct Violations in T20I Against India
Disciplinary Actions Against West Indies Players
Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford, representing the West Indies, have received official reprimands for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second T20I match against India held in Ranchi on Friday, according to the ICC.
Powell was found in violation of Article 2.2, which addresses the misuse of cricket equipment or clothing, as well as ground equipment and fixtures during an international match. Meanwhile, Rutherford breached Article 2.8, which pertains to expressing dissent towards an umpire's decision during the match.
Incident Details
Both players have received one demerit point added to their disciplinary records, marking their first offence within a 24-month timeframe. The incident involving Powell occurred in the sixth over when he, after being bowled out by Mayank Yadav, struck the ball away with his bat, violating the code. Rutherford's infraction took place in the 13th over when he vocally protested an umpire's call regarding a delivery he thought was wide.
Both players acknowledged their violations and accepted the penalties suggested by Prakash Bhatt from the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for formal hearings. The on-field umpires, Jayaraman Madanagopal and Rohan Pandit, along with third umpire Nitin Menon and fourth umpire Virender Sharma, were responsible for the charges.
Consequences of Level 1 Breaches
Level 1 breaches entail a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, with a maximum fine of 50% of a player's match fee, and can result in one or two demerit points.
