Roston Chase, the captain of the West Indies cricket team, asserts that effective leadership is significantly enhanced when it is demonstrated through on-field performances. As his team gears up for the first Test against Pakistan, he believes that teammates are more inclined to trust a captain who leads by example.
Chase's Return to Form
Chase enters this two-match series following a remarkable innings of 194 against Sri Lanka in June, marking his first Test century in over six years. This performance not only secured an innings victory for the West Indies but also ended their winless streak in the current World Test Championship cycle.
Reflecting on his resurgence after a challenging period with the bat, Chase expressed that this innings has significantly boosted his confidence and reputation within the squad. He stated, "Finding form after a tough year feels great. That innings relieved a lot of pressure, proving I can perform for the team. As a leader, when you set an example, it earns you respect and belief from your teammates, motivating them to play harder for you."
Bowling Fitness Concerns
Despite his leadership role, Chase is uncertain about his bowling capabilities due to a right index finger injury sustained during the ODI series against New Zealand. While he is expected to lead the team against Pakistan, he acknowledged that his injury has not completely healed. He mentioned, "I will assess my condition at the ground tomorrow. It's not fully healed yet, but I bowled a few balls yesterday and still feel some pain. However, I have time before the match starts, so I hope for improvement by then."
Goals for the Series
Currently ranked eighth in the World Test Championship, just above Pakistan, Chase revealed that the team aims to improve their standing. He shared, "We initially targeted a finish around fifth or sixth in the table, setting a realistic goal. Winning this series against Pakistan is crucial for us to climb the rankings."
He added, "It's vital for us to win this series to progress in the Test Championship and improve our overall Test rankings. It's been a long time since West Indies cricket was competitive in the mid-table, and we want to make our nation proud."
Advice for New Players
The West Indies squad has welcomed back batter Kirk McKenzie and introduced uncapped spinner Joshua Bishop, both of whom have shown promise in domestic cricket. Chase encouraged them to maintain the approach that earned them their selection.
"McKenzie has prior international experience, while this will be Bishop's debut. We aim to instill confidence in them and support them as they transition into this new environment," Chase noted.
He further advised, "Both players had outstanding performances in the recent WI Championship. They should build on that confidence and bring their best selves to the series, avoiding unnecessary pressure."
