West Bengal's Tensions: Governor Takes Action Amid Ongoing Violence

Kolkata: In light of the ongoing unrest in certain regions of West Bengal, particularly following violent protests against the Waqf Act, Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has instructed the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) to initiate immediate relief efforts for those affected by the riots, especially in the districts of Murshidabad and Malda.

S.K. Pattanayak, the chairman of IRCS, along with the chief nodal officer from the rapid action cell at Raj Bhavan, Kolkata, has been designated as the lead for these relief operations.

As of the latest updates, no new incidents of violence have been reported in the Murshidabad district since Sunday night. The Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) has been actively patrolling the affected areas, including Suti, Jangipur, Dhulian, and Samserganj, which experienced significant unrest.

District administration sources indicate that efforts are underway to assist families displaced by the violence that erupted on April 8.

A committee has been formed to assess the financial damages incurred due to the unrest, although the state government has not yet announced any compensation for the victims.

Authorities have stated that while the situation in Murshidabad is stabilizing, the primary concern remains the spread of misinformation through social media, prompting restrictions on internet services in certain areas of Murshidabad and parts of Malda and Birbhum.

On Sunday night, the Governor communicated that Raj Bhavan is vigilantly observing the situation and has engaged in discussions with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the ongoing crisis.

He assured that sufficient CAPF personnel are already deployed, with the possibility of additional forces being sent if required.
