Upcoming Elections and TMC's Initiatives

The second phase of voting for the West Bengal Assembly elections is scheduled for April 29, 2026. In preparation for these elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has entered an active phase to secure a government for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). According to data from the Election Commission, the state boasts a total of 71.8 million voters. Under Banerjee's leadership, the TMC has launched several initiatives aimed at benefiting women. One notable program is the Kanyashree project, which we will discuss today.

Overview of the Kanyashree Scheme

The Kanyashree scheme was initiated primarily to combat child marriage and provide financial assistance to girls. To qualify for this scheme, a girl's family income must be below ₹120,000. There are two ways to benefit from this initiative. The first option offers girls aged 13 to 18 an annual scholarship of ₹1,000 for their education, along with a bicycle.

Financial Support for Girls

The second option provides a one-time payment of ₹25,000 when a girl turns 18, with the stipulation that she must not marry at that age. Notably, in 2017, the United Nations recognized the Kanyashree scheme as one of the 552 best social sector initiatives across 62 countries, leading to an award for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

TMC's Confidence in Their Programs

The Trinamool Congress expresses strong confidence in the effectiveness of its programs. Mamata Banerjee believes that these initiatives are impactful on the ground, which is why they receive support. The Kanyashree scheme serves as a protective measure, particularly for girls from economically disadvantaged families.
