Voter List Draft Released After Extensive Revision
The Election Commission of India has released a draft of the voter list for West Bengal following a month-long intensive revision process. This announcement has sparked various controversies. The draft includes a list of voters whose names are proposed to be removed. Additionally, the Commission has published a separate list of names that were canceled after the special intensive revision in 2025. The complete voter list, prepared after this revision, is expected to be released by noon.
58 Lakh Names Expected to Be Removed from Voter List
According to sources, approximately 58.8 lakh names are likely to be removed from the state's voter list after the special intensive revision. As part of the campaign to clean up the voter list ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections next year, 58,08,202 names have been identified for removal. Reports indicate that after the counting late Thursday night, the number of names to be removed has reached 58,08,002. Currently, there are 24,18,699 deceased voters still listed in the state, along with 12,01,462 voters whose whereabouts are unknown. Officials stated that if a booth-level officer fails to locate a voter after three visits to their residence, that voter's name will be added to the list of missing voters.
Details on Voter Removal Process
During the revision process, 19,93,087 voters were identified as having changed their addresses. These voters are registered at multiple locations and will have their names removed if they are found to have incorrect addresses. Only verified addresses will be retained in the list. The Commission has identified 1,37,575 voters as fraudulent, and their names will not be included in the draft voter list. Additionally, 57,509 other voters have been categorized as 'others' and will also be excluded from the list. This removal process is part of the Election Commission's efforts to ensure an accurate and updated voter list ahead of the state elections.
Statistics on Voter Name Removals
According to the Election Commission's data, a total of 58,20,898 names have been removed from the draft list. Among these, the highest number, 24,16,852, were found to be deceased. Additionally, 19,88,076 individuals had moved, while 12,20,038 were reported missing. There were also 1,38,328 duplicate names identified, and 57,604 others were categorized under a separate classification.
