On August 8, Kolkata will witness the West Bengal government bestowing the 'West Bengal Democracy Warriors Award' to 325 individuals for their participation in protests during the Emergency period of 1975. This information was confirmed by a senior official.

The Emergency in India lasted from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, during which significant restrictions were imposed on the media, opposition leaders were arrested, civil liberties were curtailed, and administrative powers were heavily centralized. These issues continue to spark political discussions today. While the central government led by Narendra Modi observes June 25 as 'Constitution Day of Mourning,' several states, particularly those governed by the BJP, honor those imprisoned during the Emergency with awards and pensions.

This year, the BJP has made its debut in West Bengal's assembly elections. A senior official from the state government revealed that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will present the 'West Bengal Democracy Warriors Award' at an event scheduled for August 9 at the state secretariat. He noted that the awardees include individuals from nearly all districts who were incarcerated for their involvement in movements during the Emergency.
