West Bengal Prepares for High-Profile Football Friendlies Against Brazil and Uruguay
Security Measures for Upcoming Matches
Indranil Khan, the sports minister of West Bengal, discussed the security protocols established for India's upcoming friendly matches against Brazil and Uruguay in Kolkata. He also criticized the previous administration led by Mamata Banerjee for its handling of Lionel Messi's visit to the state.
The matches are scheduled for October 3 and 6 at the Salt Lake Stadium, where India will face Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion, and Uruguay, a two-time champion.
Exciting Matches Ahead
Indranil emphasized the significance of these matches, stating, "History is going to be made. Brazil, a top-5 team in the world, is bringing its full squad, and Uruguay, known for its football prowess, will also compete against the Indian Men's National Team."
Following these matches, the Women's National Team will also play at the same venue, with matches against Russia scheduled for October 8 and 11.
Critique of Previous Government's Management
Reflecting on Messi's visit last year, Indranil accused the former TMC government of mishandling the event, calling it a "messy affair." He asserted that the current government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari maintains a "zero tolerance for corruption."
"Last time, no match occurred. The previous government politicized the event and engaged in corruption," he remarked, highlighting the differences in governance.
Enhanced Security and Infrastructure Improvements
To prevent ticket black marketing, the government is implementing technology similar to that used during the FIFA World Cup, including QR-code based digital ticketing.
Indranil noted that police arrangements are in place, with top officials, including IAS and IPS officers, collaborating to ensure security. The Chief Minister is personally overseeing the preparations.
He added, "We are making significant infrastructure upgrades, including numbered seating to avoid chaos and black marketing. Two large digital screens will be installed to enhance the viewing experience, and the turf has been upgraded to meet FIFA World Cup standards."
Vision for the Future of Football in West Bengal
Indranil expressed that the upgrades are part of a broader vision for the future of football in West Bengal, not just for the upcoming matches.
"We aim for our players to one day represent India in the World Cup. Long-term strategies are being developed, including infrastructure improvements and player development initiatives. A sports revolution is on the horizon for this state," he concluded.
