West Bengal Plans Grand Durga Puja Celebrations at Eden Gardens in 2026
Eden Gardens to Host Durga Puja Events
The Youth Services & Sports Department of the West Bengal government has reached out to the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) to confirm the availability of Eden Gardens for various cultural and celebratory events scheduled for Durga Puja 2026. These events, including a major cultural celebration, are planned to take place at the renowned Kolkata stadium from September 25 to October 15, which encompasses the time needed for both setup and dismantling. The CAB has been asked to provide confirmation regarding the venue's availability by September 11.
Chief Minister Adhikari Reveals Durga Puja Plans
This request follows an announcement by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who stated that the state will kick off this year's Durga Puja festivities with a significant event at Eden Gardens on Mahalaya. "On Mahalaya, the Tourism Department and the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs will jointly host a grand event. The official commencement of Durga Puja will occur at Eden Gardens on Mahalaya, featuring a spectacular drone show and fireworks. Additionally, three major aerial drone displays are planned," CM Adhikari mentioned during a preparatory meeting for Durga Puja 2026.
The Chief Minister also imposed restrictions on the use of DJs during Durga Puja and the immersion processions, mandating compliance from organizers, vendors, and the public. "DJs are prohibited during Durga Puja and immersion processions. Full adherence from all puja organizers, vendors, and the public is essential to ensure public safety and order," he emphasized.
Furthermore, Adhikari declared that Maha Ashtami will be observed as a dry day throughout West Bengal. "To uphold the sanctity of Maha Ashtami, a complete dry day will be enforced statewide. All liquor retail outlets and bars must remain closed, with no alcohol sales allowed during the day. Total compliance is required," he stated.
The government also announced awards in various categories, including Best Idol, Best Pandal, Best Eco-Friendly Puja, Best Crowd Management, Best Pandal Art, and Best Sculptor, with an independent panel of judges proposed to ensure a fair selection process.
Possible Scheduling Conflicts with Cricket
Eden Gardens, a historic cricket venue, serves as the headquarters for CAB and is home to the Bengal cricket team and the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. The next cricket match scheduled at the stadium is the Ranji Trophy Elite Group C game between Bengal and Delhi, set to begin on October 11. This means that the proposed Durga Puja events will overlap with the start of Bengal's domestic cricket season at the venue.
