West Bengal Government to Launch New Initiatives for Women
New Initiatives for Women in West Bengal
Following the establishment of a new government in West Bengal, significant decisions regarding women's welfare are being expedited. Reports indicate that the state government is set to implement the Annapurna Bhandar scheme starting next month. Additionally, efforts are underway to provide free travel for women on state transport buses.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's administration is prioritizing this initiative as part of its key welfare programs. In this context, the newly appointed Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal convened a high-level meeting at the Nabanna state secretariat shortly after taking office. The meeting was attended by secretaries from nearly all departments and senior administrative officials.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held regarding the implementation of the Annapurna Bhandar scheme, beneficiary verification, and administrative preparations. According to government sources, officials have been given clear instructions that any negligence in implementing the scheme will not be tolerated. Notably, during the elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party promised to deposit ₹3,000 directly into women's bank accounts each month.
The state government aims to ensure that this financial assistance reaches only eligible women. Therefore, a verification campaign for beneficiaries will be conducted. Reports suggest that women who previously benefited from the Mamata Banerjee government's Lakshmi Bhandar scheme will have their documents, bank accounts, and identification information re-verified.
Government officials have stated that if a woman's name has been removed from the voter list or her death has been confirmed, she will not be eligible for the new scheme. However, women whose records are already in the government database will not need to reapply. Once the verification process is complete, they can be directly included in the Annapurna Bhandar scheme.
On the other hand, a separate application process will be initiated for women who have not yet benefited from the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme. The state government is expected to release detailed notifications regarding eligibility, application procedures, and benefit distribution soon.
During the meeting, Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal emphasized to officials that there should be no discrepancies or fraud when preparing the list of beneficiaries. The district administration and relevant departments have been instructed to enhance monitoring. Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on disseminating accurate information to avoid any confusion regarding the scheme.
