This year's elections in West Bengal have presented a notably different scenario. Typically, election periods are marred by reports of tension and violence, but this time, both the voter turnout and the peaceful environment have garnered attention.
During a recent hearing in the Supreme Court, the judges commended the significant voter turnout and the calm atmosphere in West Bengal. The Chief Justice expressed his satisfaction as a citizen witnessing a large number of people participating in the voting process. He emphasized that when citizens understand the power of democracy and adhere to regulations, the likelihood of violence diminishes significantly.
Notably, senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee informed the court that approximately 92% voter turnout was recorded in the first phase of the assembly elections, marking a historic achievement. He also mentioned that many migrant workers returned home to exercise their voting rights.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi highlighted the absence of major violence despite such a high voter turnout. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the central government, concurred, stating that the security forces performed admirably, preventing any untoward incidents.
However, he acknowledged that some minor incidents did occur, but overall, the situation remained under control. Justice Bagchi referenced a Bengali proverb, noting that often, the common people suffer in the struggles of the powerful, but this time, the circumstances appeared different.
This case pertains to complaints regarding the addition and removal of names from the voter list. The court indicated that individuals with grievances regarding this process could approach the High Court or appellate authority.
The high voter turnout and the anticipated peaceful environment in West Bengal's elections have reinforced public trust in democracy, signaling that when the populace is informed, the electoral process can become more robust and secure.
