Early Trends from West Bengal Assembly Elections

Kolkata: As the counting of votes continues in West Bengal, the BJP is currently leading in 24 Assembly seats, while the TMC has a lead in five, according to early reports from the Election Commission.

The Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), a TMC ally in the Darjeeling hills, is ahead in two constituencies: Kalimpong and Darjeeling.

Initial reports from regional television channels indicate that BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is leading in the Nandigram assembly constituency by approximately 3,100 votes after the first round of counting.

Adhikari's main competitor is TMC's Pabitra Kar.

The Election Commission has not yet updated the Nandigram seat figures on its official site.

Adhikari mentioned to reporters in Kolkata that out of the 14 booths counted in Nandigram's first round, five were predominantly Muslim, and even there, the TMC is facing challenges.

He confidently stated that the BJP is poised to form the next government in West Bengal.

As the leader of the opposition in the outgoing assembly, he claims to be leading in 135 out of the 293 seats where votes are being counted.

In significant contests, BJP candidate Lakshmi Kanta Sau is leading in Jhargram with 5,156 votes, while TMC's Mongal Saren trails with 4,180 votes.

In Kolkata, BJP's Purnima Chakraborty is ahead by 283 votes against TMC minister Shashi Panja, and in Monteswar, BJP's Saikat Panja leads TMC's Siddiqullah Chowdhury by 3,486 votes.

From Asansol Dakshin, BJP's Agnimitra Paul is leading by 6,271 votes over her TMC opponent.

The BJP is also showing strength in various other constituencies, including Dinhata, Gosaba, Baghmundi, Bankura, Durgapur Purba, Binpur, Nayagram, Rajganj, and Bhagwangola, suggesting early advantages across multiple regions.

Conversely, TMC's Anisur Rahaman Bidesh is leading in Deganga by 2,184 votes against his BJP rival.

The ruling party is also ahead in Kasba and Entally in Kolkata, as well as Singur in Hooghly.

In Kalimpong, BGPM candidate Ruden Sada Lepcha is leading by 457 votes over BJP's Bharat Kumar Chetri, and the party is also ahead in Darjeeling, reinforcing its foothold in the hills.

Vote counting for the state's 293 Assembly constituencies commenced at 8 am, starting with postal ballots as per Election Commission guidelines, followed by EVM votes.

This high-stakes election is viewed as a critical challenge for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party as they seek a fourth consecutive term against a formidable BJP opposition.

Officials anticipate that trends may shift as more counting rounds are completed, with clearer patterns expected to emerge later in the day.
