West Bengal CM Challenges Electoral Roll Revision in Supreme Court

Mamata Banerjee's Supreme Court Appearance

During a recent Supreme Court session, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, expressed concerns that her state is being unfairly targeted through a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls. She raised the question of why a similar process is not being implemented in Assam, which is governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

This marks a historic moment as it is the first instance of a chief minister making a verbal submission before the court.

In her petition, Banerjee highlighted that the ongoing voter list revision could lead to mass disenfranchisement just ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, anticipated in April or May. She has requested the court to ensure that the elections proceed based on the electoral rolls established last year.

New Government Formed in Manipur

Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party, has taken the oath as the Chief Minister of Manipur, marking the end of a year under President’s Rule in the state. Alongside him, Nemcha Kipgen, representing the Kuki community, and Losii Dikho from the Naga community were sworn in as deputy chief ministers.

The imposition of President’s Rule occurred in February 2025 after N Biren Singh resigned amid accusations of biased handling of ethnic violence in Manipur.

Khemchand Singh previously served as the Assembly speaker from 2017 to 2022 and held a ministerial position in Singh's government.

Kuki-Zo groups have been advocating for a separate administrative arrangement in the form of a Union Territory in areas predominantly inhabited by their community to resolve ongoing conflicts.

India-US Trade Deal Updates

In a recent statement to Parliament, the Union government assured that sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy will be safeguarded in the trade agreement between India and the United States. Union Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that the US is also protecting its sensitive sectors.

He emphasized that negotiators are finalizing the technical aspects of the deal, with further details expected to be released shortly.

This announcement followed comments from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged $500 billion in purchases from the US, including agricultural goods. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer mentioned that India has agreed to lower tariffs on various US agricultural and manufactured products.

Opposition parties have criticized Modi, claiming he compromised the interests of Indian farmers under US pressure to finalize the agreement.

Death Penalty Statistics in India

A recent study revealed that Indian sessions courts imposed death sentences on 1,279 individuals from 2016 to 2025, yet only 70 of these sentences were upheld by High Courts, indicating a significant discrepancy.

As of the end of last year, there were 574 individuals on death row in India, the highest number recorded since 2016, according to research conducted by the criminal reform advocacy group The Square Circle Clinic.

For the third consecutive year in 2025, the Supreme Court did not confirm any death sentences, raising concerns about wrongful convictions, which the study suggests cannot be dismissed as mere anomalies.
