CID Interrogation of Sumit Roy

On August 8, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal conducted an extensive interrogation of Sumit Roy, a close aide to Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, lasting nearly ten hours. This questioning was part of an investigation into a case involving fraudulent activities related to government land in the West Midnapore district, as reported by officials.

CID officials questioned Roy at their headquarters, Bhawani Bhavan. The Supreme Court has granted him interim protection from arrest until August 14, contingent upon his cooperation with the investigation. A CID officer stated, 'Our officials interrogated him for several hours.'

The investigation is still in its early stages, and no details can be disclosed at this time. Roy appeared before the agency in the morning and exited the headquarters around 8:20 PM. When asked if Roy would need to return for further questioning, the officer indicated that it would depend on the requirements of the case. A senior CID official previously mentioned that the agency is examining the allegations against Roy and will verify claims based on evidence.

The officer noted, 'We are investigating the allegations and gathering all relevant documents. Each claim will be verified based on evidence, and appropriate legal action will follow.' The Supreme Court instructed Roy to assist in the investigation and be available for questioning between 10 AM and 6 PM, without the presence of any lawyer or other individuals during the interrogation.

The CID has been seeking Roy following the arrest of former Trinamool Congress MLA Sujay Hazra in connection with the Salbani land fraud case.
