Kolkata, Apr 23: The first phase of assembly elections in West Bengal saw a voter turnout of 18.76% within the initial two hours, as reported by the Election Commission.

Polling commenced at 7 am across 152 assembly constituencies in 16 districts, with 18.76% of the 3.60 crore eligible voters participating by 9 am.

The Bankura constituency led with a turnout of 22.05%, followed closely by Samserganj in Murshidabad at 21.85% and Chandrakona in Paschim Medinipur at 21.83%, according to the EC.

Conversely, Coochbehar Dakshin recorded the lowest turnout at 15.57%, with Chanchal in Malda at 15.64% and Harischandrapur at 15.98%.

Some polling stations experienced disruptions due to EVM malfunctions, with officials working to resolve the issues.

Sanjoy Adhikari, the Congress candidate from Suri, reported being unable to vote due to an EVM issue despite arriving at his polling station at 7 am. He expressed frustration over the lack of EC representatives to address the situation, as hundreds of voters waited in line.

Adhikari stated that the party has requested the Election Commission to either extend polling hours at the affected booth or arrange for a re-poll if the EVM was not fixed by 10 am.

Meanwhile, Mausam Noor, the Congress candidate from Malatipur, successfully cast her vote and expressed optimism about her chances of winning. She noted that reports indicated a peaceful voting process so far.

Reports of overnight violence in certain areas were also noted by officials.

Prominent candidates in this election phase include opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari (BJP, Nandigram), former Union minister Nisith Pramanik (BJP, Mathabhanga), state minister Udayan Guha (TMC, Dinhata), Goutam Deb (TMC, Siliguri), and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury (Congress, Baharampur).

Adhikari voted at Nandanayakbar Primary School in Nandigram and encouraged voters to ensure a peaceful election process.

Dilip Ghosh, the BJP candidate for Kharagpur Sadar, also cast his vote at booth number 263 in Serosa Stadium, located in Paschim Medinipur district. He mentioned that he would remain at home unless necessary, noting that the voting atmosphere was calm.

This initial round of voting encompasses over half of the state's 294 assembly seats and is viewed as a critical opportunity for the BJP to gain traction, while it poses a significant challenge for the ruling Trinamool Congress as it seeks a fourth consecutive term.
