Formation of New Government in West Bengal
Following the BJP's remarkable victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the process of establishing a new government is gaining momentum. All eyes are now on the potential candidates for the Chief Minister position. A meeting of the BJP legislative party is scheduled for Friday in Kolkata, which will also see the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. It is anticipated that the name of the Chief Minister may be revealed during this gathering.
BJP's Electoral Success
In the recent elections, the BJP secured victories in 207 seats, achieving a majority of over two-thirds, while the TMC was limited to just 80 seats. This marks the first time the BJP will form a government in Bengal, and all eyes are on the potential candidates for the Chief Minister role.
Potential Chief Minister Candidates
Shubhendu Adhikari
Considered the strongest candidate for the Chief Minister position, Shubhendu Adhikari is a prominent face of the BJP in Bengal. His political influence, organizational impact, and robust grassroots network make him the party's top choice. He has successfully challenged the TMC led by Mamata Banerjee in the last two assembly elections.
Dilip Ghosh
Senior BJP leader and former state president Dilip Ghosh is also in the running for the Chief Minister role. He has played a crucial role in strengthening the party in Bengal, and his influence within the organization remains significant.
Samik Bhattacharya
Current state president Samik Bhattacharya is another potential candidate for the Chief Minister position. Under his leadership, the party performed exceptionally well in the recent assembly elections. He has been associated with the RSS since 1974 and has previously served as the state general secretary and a member of the national working committee.
Agnimitra Paul
Fashion designer and outspoken leader Agnimitra Paul is also a contender for the Chief Minister role. She joined the BJP in 2019 and won her assembly seat by defeating TMC's Sayani Ghosh in 2021. In January 2025, she was appointed as the vice president of Bengal BJP and secured victory from the Asansol South constituency in this election.
Awaiting Clarity on Chief Ministerial Candidate
While the suspense surrounding the BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate continues, clarity is expected soon. Political analysts believe that the decision will be made based on organizational influence and public acceptance.
